What is a Trucut Biopsy?

A Trucut biopsy (also called core needle biopsy) is a minimally invasive procedure in which a special hollow needle is used to remove a small cylinder of tissue from a suspicious lump, tumour, or organ.

The sample obtained is larger than what a fine needle aspiration (FNAC) provides — allowing the pathologist to examine tissue architecture and perform molecular tests such as IHC, NGS, and hormone receptor testing.

Trucut biopsies are performed with precision, using local anaesthesia and imaging guidance when needed — for accurate and safe diagnosis.

How the Procedure is Done

A trucut biopsy is a short, outpatient procedure usually completed within 15–30 minutes. Most patients return home the same day.

  • Local anaesthesia at the site
  • Imaging guidance (USG/CT) when needed
  • Small needle inserted to collect tissue
  • 2–4 core samples typically taken
  • Samples sent for pathology & molecular tests
  • Results usually available in 3–5 days

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about trucut biopsy

Trucut biopsy is done under local anaesthesia. Most patients feel only mild pressure or a brief pinch. Any soreness usually settles within a day or two.

FNAC uses a thin needle to collect cells, while trucut biopsy uses a thicker needle to obtain a small tissue core. Trucut provides more information — useful for cancer typing and molecular testing.

Trucut biopsy is generally very safe. Minor risks include bruising, mild bleeding, or discomfort at the site. Serious complications are rare.

Basic pathology results are usually available within 3–5 days. If molecular testing (IHC, NGS) is needed, it may take 1–2 weeks.
