What is Hormonal Therapy?

Hormonal therapy (also called endocrine therapy) is a cancer treatment that slows or stops the growth of hormone-sensitive tumours. It works by blocking the body's natural hormones or by altering how cancer cells receive hormonal signals.

It is commonly used in cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, and certain other hormone-dependent tumours. Hormonal therapy may be given as tablets, injections, or sometimes surgically.

Hormonal therapy is prescribed based on accurate diagnosis, hormone receptor status, and international treatment protocols.

Types of Hormonal Therapy

Different ways hormonal therapy acts on cancer cells

Anti-Estrogen Therapy

Blocks estrogen action — used in hormone-positive breast cancer.

Aromatase Inhibitors

Reduce estrogen production — commonly used after menopause.

LHRH Agonists

Shut down ovarian or testicular hormone production.

Anti-Androgen Therapy

Blocks testosterone — used in prostate cancer.

Surgical Hormonal Therapy

Removal of hormone-producing organs (ovaries/testes) in selected cases.

Combination Therapy

Used with chemotherapy, targeted therapy or radiation.

Hormone Receptor Testing

Before starting hormonal therapy, tumour tissue is tested for hormone receptors. In breast cancer, this includes ER, PR, and HER2 status. In prostate cancer, PSA and androgen receptor testing may guide treatment.

  • ER / PR testing in breast cancer
  • HER2 status for treatment planning
  • PSA testing in prostate cancer
