What is Cancer Surgery?

Cancer surgery (also called surgical oncology) involves removing tumours, affected tissues, and sometimes nearby lymph nodes. It is one of the oldest and most effective treatments for many solid cancers — especially when the cancer is localised.

Surgery can be curative (to remove cancer completely), diagnostic (to obtain tissue for testing), debulking (to reduce tumour size), or palliative (to relieve symptoms).

Surgical oncology services are delivered in a modern operation theatre, with a multidisciplinary approach that combines surgery with other treatments when needed.

Removal of tumour with a margin of healthy tissue.

Lymph Node Dissection

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about cancer surgery

In many early-stage cancers, surgery can remove the cancer completely and offer a cure. In advanced stages, surgery may be combined with other treatments or used to relieve symptoms.

Recovery depends on the type and extent of surgery. Minimally invasive surgeries usually have faster recovery. Your surgeon will advise on activity and follow-up.

In some cases, chemotherapy or radiation may be advised after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to reduce the risk of recurrence. The decision is based on pathology and staging.

Most cancer surgeries leave some scarring. Minimally invasive techniques leave smaller scars. In certain cases, reconstructive surgery may be offered.
