What is a Bone Marrow Biopsy?

A bone marrow biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of bone marrow — the soft tissue inside bones where blood cells are made — is removed and examined under a microscope.

It is usually combined with bone marrow aspiration, where a small amount of liquid marrow is drawn out. Together, they help diagnose blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, as well as non-cancerous blood disorders.

Bone marrow biopsy is performed under local anaesthesia with precision and care — ensuring maximum patient comfort.

How the Procedure is Done

A bone marrow biopsy is usually performed on the back of the hip bone (posterior iliac crest). It is a short procedure done under local anaesthesia — most patients go home the same day.

  • Local anaesthesia at the site
  • Small skin incision if needed
  • Aspiration — liquid marrow sample
  • Biopsy — core tissue sample
  • Sample sent for pathology & molecular tests
  • Results in 3–7 days

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about bone marrow biopsy

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Most patients feel mild pressure or a brief discomfort, but not significant pain. Any soreness settles within a day or two.

Aspiration collects liquid bone marrow (cells), while biopsy collects a small solid core of marrow tissue. Both are often done together for complete evaluation.

Bone marrow biopsy is very safe. Minor risks include bruising, mild bleeding, or discomfort at the site. Serious complications are rare.

Basic results are usually available within 3–7 days. If molecular or cytogenetic testing is needed, it may take 1–2 weeks.
