What is Leukemia?

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues — mainly the bone marrow — where the body produces too many abnormal white blood cells. These abnormal cells crowd out healthy blood cells, leading to infections, anemia, and bleeding problems.

Leukemia can be acute (fast-growing) or chronic (slow-growing), and is classified based on the type of blood cell involved — lymphoid or myeloid. The four main types are ALL, AML, CLL, and CML.

Leukemia is diagnosed and treated with modern protocols, molecular testing, and personalised care — with a focus on safety, precision and patient comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about leukemia

Yes — many leukemias are treatable and some are curable, especially in children and young adults. Outcomes depend on the type, subtype, age, and response to treatment.

Acute leukemia develops quickly and requires urgent treatment. Chronic leukemia develops slowly and may not need immediate treatment — often monitored or managed long-term.

Diagnosis involves blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, and molecular testing (flow cytometry, cytogenetics, NGS). These help identify the specific type and guide treatment.

Not always. Some chronic leukemias are managed with targeted therapy or oral medications. The choice depends on the specific type and molecular profile.
