What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells — a type of white blood cell that normally produces antibodies to fight infection. In myeloma, abnormal plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and produce an abnormal protein, crowding out healthy blood cells.

This can lead to problems such as bone pain and fractures, anemia, kidney damage, frequent infections, and elevated calcium levels. It is most common in adults over 60 years of age.

Multiple myeloma is diagnosed with modern testing and treated with evidence-based protocols — including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about multiple myeloma

Multiple myeloma is generally not curable, but it is highly treatable. With modern therapies, many patients live for years with good quality of life. Treatment aims at long-term control.

MGUS and smoldering myeloma are pre-cancerous conditions with abnormal proteins but no organ damage. Active myeloma causes symptoms and requires treatment.

Diagnosis involves blood & urine tests (M-protein, free light chains), bone marrow biopsy, and imaging (X-ray, MRI, or PET-CT) to assess bone involvement.

In some cases, targeted therapy or oral medications may be used without traditional chemotherapy. The choice depends on the patient's age, stage, and overall health.
